Thai amputee elephant gets artificial leg

Motola, the female elephant stepped on a landmine 10 years ago is fitted with a permanent prosthetic leg
An elephant in Thailand that lost his foot after stepping on a landmine 10 years ago is due to be fitted with a permanent prosthetic leg.

The 48-year-old Motola's front left foot was amputated after treading on a landmine while working at a logging camp along Thailand's border with Myanmar a decade ago.

Since the loss, she has managed to walk along on three legs or with a temporary canvas shoe.

After a decade of hobbling, Motola can walk on for feet with a permanent plastic limb.

Thailand's borders with Burma and Cambodia are contaminated with unexploded landmines, as the result of decades of conflict.

Another 3-year-old elephant has also been a landmine victim. Mosha became the world's first elephant with an artificial leg, attached in 2007.
